Detroit River Charter Info

We will fish a variety of different locations as walleye move up and down the river during their annual spawning migration.  Some classic areas we may fish include the Steel Mills, Mud Island, Fighting Island and Walleye Alley.  You will be jigging with ¾ to 1 ounce jigs tipped with artificial bait and a stinger hook.  We use St Croix rods and Shimano spinning reels filled with PowerPro line, for better feel and hook setting abilities.

PLEASE have your licenses before you arrive at the river, since there is nowhere close to buy one.  See the license section below for information on getting your licenses.

What to Bring:

Warm clothes are a must.  We will be fishing in April and May and even if the air temperature is warm, the water temperature is still in the 40-degree range.  Best advice is to overdress and we can store your extra clothes if you get too warm.  A good quality warm coat, hat, gloves, and rain gear should keep you comfortable most days.  Boots and warm socks are always a good idea.  If you bring a bag with clothes, please be sure it can be zipped or snapped shut.

Captain Keith will provide comfortable, auto inflating life jackets for each customer.  Captain Keith also supplies all fishing equipment, but if you have a favorite rod, bring it along.  Sox foot medium heavy action spinning rods are perfect for vertical jigging with the jigs we use.

Feel free to bring lunch, drinks or snacks, but please keep cooler size to a minimum and be sure any coolers have lids that can be tightly secured.  Please try to bring beverages in bottles with lids to prevent spilling.  NO ALCOHOL allowed on board if fishing in Canadian waters.

A camera or cell phone to take a picture of your catch is always a good idea.

Be sure to bring a cooler and gallon sized baggies to take your catch home in.

Fishing Licenses:

All anglers 17 and older are required to have a valid Michigan fishing license.  Michigan fishing license can be bought online at http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/Welcome/Default.aspx  Please have your license before you arrive at the river, since there is no place close to purchase a license.

Canadian fishing licenses:  Highly recommended since many days the best fishing takes place on the Canadian side of the river.  The difference can be significant in both numbers and size of fish caught during your trip.  Please have your Canadian license BEFORE arriving at the river, since there is no place in the area to purchase one. You can purchase them online at http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/OC/2ColumnSubPage/STDPROD_091032.html

Notes on Canada fishing:  In Canada, all minors under 17 can fish without a license, but each minor must have an adult with a license to fish under.  If the minor does not have a license, the minor and the adult are only allowed one limit of fish combined between the two of them.

If we will be fishing in Canada, each person on board must be able to prove citizenship with one of the following documents on their person:  1) enhanced driver’s license 2) passport 3) passport card

The following items are NOT permitted in Canada:  Firearms, Alcoholic beverages, over 10K in cash, tobacco products.

Food & Drinks:

Bring any food and drink you would like to eat during the day in a SMALL cooler with a lid that can be tightly secured. Please have beverages in bottles that can be resealed to prevent spilling.

No Alcohol or Drugs Allowed – sorry but there is ABSOLUTELY NO alcohol or non-prescription drugs allowed on any Charter Trip.  No Medical Marijuana allowed.

Fish Cleaning:

Due to the quick turnaround time between morning and afternoon charters, Captain Keith is NOT available to clean fish after a trip.

Hotel Accommodations:

There are several hotels and motels conveniently located near the Detroit River.  These are generally not luxury accommodations but are “fisherman friendly” and keep you close to the hot spring fishing action.

Musky Fishing

The most productive fishing method for catching musky on Lake St. Clair is trolling large crank baits, spinners, and plugs off planer boards and directly behind the boat in the foam and prop wash.  In the past it wasn’t uncommon to only average one strike for every fifteen hours of trolling.  In recent years Lake St Clair has exploded with big numbers and big fish.  In fact, its not uncommon to catch up to 10 Muskies in a day now Often Captain Keith has produced over a dozen in just one day of fishing.

We strive to maintain and enhance to musky fishery in LSC so all our Musky fishing is Catch and Release.

Musky Casting

Trolling for muskies on Lake St. Clair provides the greatest thrill available in freshwater fishing.  At times, however, Lake St. Clair Musky casting can be a blast as well.  Casting big Musky plastics, bucktails or wooden plugs for these freshwater predators is something everyone should try.  A big musky striking right at the boat is an experience an angler must have.
